2.3 The Magic of Flowering

The flowering stage is the grand finale of your grow. It's when your plant transitions from growing foliage to producing beautiful, resinous buds.

Flower Parameters

The Flip:

For photoperiod plants, the transition to flowering is triggered by a change in the light cycle. Flip your timer to 12 hours of light and 12 hours of uninterrupted darkness.

Nutrients:

As the plant begins to form buds, its nutrient needs change. It will now require higher levels of Phosphorus (P) and Potassium (K) and less Nitrogen. Switch to a nutrient product labeled as "bloom" or "flower."

Odor Control:

As your plant's flowers mature, their scent will become much more potent. This is where a carbon filter attached to your exhaust fan becomes essential for controlling odor.

Pre-Flower:

Within 1-2 weeks of flipping the light cycle, your plant will show its first signs of sex. Look for tiny, white hairs (pistils) emerging from the nodes.

Cannabis Flowering Phase Checklist

  • Light Schedule: Switch to a 12/12 light cycle (12 hours on, 12 hours off) to trigger and maintain the flowering process.

  • Nutrients: Transition to a nutrient formula high in Phosphorus (P) and Potassium (K) to support bud production, while reducing Nitrogen.

  • Watering: Continue to water thoroughly, but be mindful of the plant's increased water consumption as it grows larger.

  • Environment: Lower the relative humidity to 40-50% to prevent mold and bud rot. Keep temperatures between 68-78°F.

  • Support: Use stakes, trellises, or netting to support the heavy weight of developing buds.

  • Pruning: Perform a final, light pruning or "lollipopping" at the start of the flowering stage to remove lower growth and focus energy on the top colas. Avoid heavy pruning during this phase.

  • Pest Check: Maintain a vigilant watch for pests and diseases, as plants are more vulnerable and you cannot use most sprays during flowering.

  • Harvest Prep: Begin to monitor trichomes as harvest approaches to determine the optimal time to harvest.
