2.4 The Final Payoff: Harvest Readiness

Knowing when to harvest is a skill that separates good growers from great ones. Harvesting at the right time ensures your buds have reached their peak potency and flavor.

When to Harvest "Two More Weeks"

The only reliable indicator is the color of the color of the trichomes.

  • Trichome Color: This is the most accurate indicator. Trichomes are the tiny, mushroom-shaped glands on the buds and sugar leaves that produce cannabinoids. You will need a jeweler's loupe or a digital microscope to see them clearly.
    • Clear: The trichomes are not yet mature. The buds are still developing.

  • Cloudy/Milky: The THC content is at its peak. This is when most growers prefer to harvest for a more cerebral, euphoric effect.

  • Amber: The THC is beginning to degrade into CBN, which produces a more sedative, relaxing effect. Harvesting with 10-20% amber trichomes is a good target for a balanced effect.

Harvest Checklist and Preparing for the cure

  • Final Flush: Stop giving your plants nutrients and feed them only pH-balanced water for the last 1-2 weeks before harvest. This flushes out excess salts from the media and reduces the chance of nutrient burn late in flower.

  • Trichome Check: Use a jeweler's loupe or a microscope to inspect the trichomes (the small, mushroom-shaped glands on the buds). The ideal time to harvest is when most trichomes are cloudy/milky, with a few turning amber.

  • Harvest Tools: Gather your supplies: sharp trimming scissors (or electric trimmers for larger harvests), latex gloves, and a sterile tray or bowl to hold the buds.

  • Trim Method: Decide if you will wet trim (trimming buds right after cutting the plant) or dry trim (drying the whole plant and trimming later). Wet trimming is faster, but dry trimming can preserve more terpenes.

  • Drying Space: Prepare a dark room with good air circulation. The ideal drying environment is 60-70°F with 45-55% relative humidity.

  • Hanging & Curing: Hang whole branches or individual buds on a line to dry. After they are dry (usually 5-10 days), trim them and place them in airtight glass jars, filling them about ¾ full.

  • The "Burp": For the first week of curing, you'll open the jars for 10-15 minutes once or twice a day to release moisture and allow for fresh air exchange. This is a crucial step for a high-quality cure.

  • Storage: Store your cured buds in the airtight jars in a cool, dark place for long-term preservation.
