2.2 Mastering the Vegetative Stage

The vegetative (veg) stage is all about growth. Your plant will be focused on developing a strong root system, a thick stem, and lush foliage to prepare for the heavy demands of flowering.

Veg Parameters

Light Cycle:

Maintain an 18/6 light cycle (or 24/0 if you prefer continuous growth). This continuous light prevents the plant from flowering and allows for maximum growth.

Nutrients:

In this stage, your plant needs high levels of Nitrogen (N), along with a balanced mix of Phosphorus (P) and Potassium (K), and micronutrients. Look for nutrient products labeled as "grow" or "veg."

Watering:

Your plant's water intake will increase dramatically. Water thoroughly until you see runoff from the bottom of the pot, then wait until the top few inches of the medium are dry before watering again.

Key Techniques:

This is the ideal time to perform Low-Stress Training (LST) or High-Stress Training (HST) techniques to shape your plant for a better yield. By bending, tying down, or topping the plant, you can create a more even canopy and maximize light exposure.

Cannabis Vegetative Phase Checklist

  • Light Schedule: Maintain a consistent 18/6 light cycle (18 hours on, 6 hours off) to promote rapid growth.

  • Nutrients: Use a nutrient solution high in Nitrogen (N) to support the development of leaves and stems.

  • Watering: Water thoroughly, but allow the top inch or two of soil to dry out between waterings.

  • Environment: Keep temperatures between 70-85°F and relative humidity between 40-60%.

  • Training: Begin Low-Stress Training (LST) or High-Stress Training (HST) to shape the plant and create more bud sites.

  • Transplanting: Move the plant to a larger container as its root system expands, typically every 2-4 weeks.

  • Pruning: Remove any unnecessary lower branches or large fan leaves that are not receiving light to improve airflow and direct energy to the top of the plant.

  • Pest Check: Regularly inspect leaves for signs of pests or nutrient deficiencies.
