6.2 Let There Be Light: Comparison of Lighting Technologies

Light is the fuel for your plants. It drives photosynthesis and, for photoperiod plants, dictates their life cycle. Choosing the right light for your space and budget is one of the most important decisions you'll make.

Light just is

LED (Light Emitting Diode):

  • The modern standard for cannabis cultivation.

  • Pros: Highly energy-efficient, produces very little heat, and has a long lifespan. They can be tuned to provide the full spectrum of light (from blue to red) needed for both vegetative and flowering stages.

  • Cons: Higher initial cost than other lighting types.

HID (High-Intensity Discharge):

This includes both Metal Halide (MH) and High-Pressure Sodium (HPS) bulbs.

MH bulbs are great for the vegetative stage (blue spectrum).

HPS bulbs are ideal for the flowering stage (red/orange spectrum).

  • Pros: Powerful, great for large grows, and have a relatively low initial cost.

  • Cons: Produce a lot of heat (requiring more powerful ventilation), are less energy-efficient, and have a shorter lifespan.

Fluorescent and CFL (Compact Fluorescent Light):

  • Pros: Low heat output and very low initial cost, making them a great option for seedlings and clones.

  • Cons: Very low light intensity, making them unsuitable for the flowering stage.

Hybrid Lighting Systems

Hybrid lighting involves using a combination of different lighting types in the same grow space to take advantage of the unique benefits of each technology. A common setup pairs powerful HID lights with more energy-efficient LEDs.

  • Advantages:
    • Comprehensive Spectrum: You can use the raw power and deep penetration of an HPS light for high yields while supplementing with LEDs to fill in gaps in the light spectrum, leading to higher potency and a richer flavor profile.

  • Improved Heat Management: By replacing some of your HPS wattage with LEDs, you can significantly reduce the overall heat load in your grow room, making it easier to manage the climate.

  • Disadvantages:
    • Increased Complexity: A hybrid setup is more difficult to manage. You'll have multiple fixtures with different electrical needs, light outputs, and hanging requirements.

  • Higher Initial Cost: While potentially more cost-effective than a top-of-the-line all-LED setup, a hybrid system is still more expensive than a basic HID or fluorescent setup.

  • Space: It requires more space and can be a challenge to hang and manage in a smaller grow tent.
