4.4 The Nutrient Code: Explaining Nutrient Mixing & EC

No matter which grow style you choose, you must understand two critical metrics to ensure a healthy plant: pH and EC.

Being The Controller

pH (Potential Hydrogen):

This measures the acidity or alkalinity of your water and nutrient solution. Your plant can only absorb nutrients if the pH is in the correct range.

Soil:

A pH range of 6.0-7.0 is ideal.

Soilless/Hydroponics:

A slightly more acidic range of 5.5-6.5 is best.

EC (Electrical Conductivity):

This measures the concentration of salts and nutrients in your solution. It's a direct indicator of how much your plant is "eating."

Low EC:

Could indicate a nutrient deficiency.

High EC:

A sign of a potential nutrient burn.

pH meter:

Essential tool to monitor your nutrient water before every feeding.

EC meter:

An invaluable tool for hydroponic and soilless growers to precisely manage their nutrient regimen. It is a measurement that lets you know if the plant is consuming nutrients. If the EC of the runoff is higher than the input, the plant is not taking what it needs.

The technical side of nutrient management

These soilless and hydroponic systems can seem intimidating.

However, because problems can happen so much quicker, it is crucial to have an understanding of the visual signs plants show when they are in distress from different causes.

Knowing what to look for and how to interpret your plant's signals is key to a successful grow.

More detailed information on this type of troubleshooting can be found in Section 7: Plant Health and Diagnostics.
