3.4 Feminized vs. Regular Seeds

This choice is straightforward for most home growers. The difference is whether the seed is guaranteed to produce a female plant.

Feminized or Regular...

Feminized Seeds:

These are bred to produce only female plants, which are the ones that produce buds. For a beginner focused on a single harvest, this is the most logical choice. It saves you the time and effort of having to identify and remove male plants, which would pollinate your females and ruin your first harvest.

Regular Seeds:

This choice is straightforward for most home growers. The difference is whether the seed is guaranteed to produce a female plant.

These seeds have a 50/50 chance of being male or female.

  • Why use them?
    • One reason to use regular seeds is if you intend to breed your own strains. Male plants produce pollen, which is necessary to create new seeds.

  • Another Reason is why limit yourself. There is an extra step of removing males from the female population but that is another fun thing to do anyways.

The Future of Genetics: Triploids

Triploid cannabis represents a significant advancement in genetic science, though it is not yet widely available to home growers. A triploid plant has three sets of chromosomes instead of the standard two (diploid).

  • The Advantage: Because they are sterile, triploid plants do not produce viable seeds. They can focus all their energy on producing cannabinoids and terpenes, which often results in higher yields and more potent final products.

  • Availability: Currently, triploid cannabis is primarily sold as clones to large-scale commercial cultivators. It is not a practical option for the average home grower, but it is an exciting look at the future of cultivation.
