1.2 The Indoor vs. Outdoor Debate

The most fundamental decision you'll make is where to grow. Both indoor and outdoor cultivation have distinct advantages and challenges that will impact your entire grow from start to finish.

Indoor Outdoor or Both

Is It Legal?

If it isn't. I have to say dont do it.

Indoor Cultivation:

Indoor growing gives you complete control over every environmental variable, which is its greatest advantage. You are not at the mercy of the weather, pests, or diseases.

  • Pros:
    • Control: You can precisely control temperature, humidity, light cycles, and airflow. This allows for optimal growth and multiple harvests per year.

  • Discretion & Security: Your grow is private and protected from public view and theft. Odor can be managed with a carbon filter and exhaust fan.

  • Pest and Disease Management: A sealed, controlled environment makes it easier to prevent and manage pest outbreaks and fungal diseases like powdery mildew.

  • Cons:
    • Higher Initial Costs: The cost to set up a grow space with lights, fans, filters, and other equipment is a significant initial investment.

  • Higher Ongoing Costs: The energy consumption of grow lights, fans, and sometimes air conditioning or humidifiers can lead to a higher electricity bill.

Environmental Vitals for Indoor Growing:

To maximize growth, you'll need to maintain specific environmental conditions. While these are just general guidelines, they are a great place to start:

  • Seedling Stage: Temperature: 75-80°F (24-27°C) | Humidity: 65-70% RH

  • Vegetative Stage: Temperature: 70-85°F (21-29°C) | Humidity: 40-70% RH

  • Flowering Stage: Temperature: 68-79°F (20-26°C) | Humidity: 40-50% RH

Outdoor Cultivation:

Outdoor growing relies on the natural environment to do most of the work for you.

  • Pros:
    • Lower Initial Costs: You rely on the sun for light and natural air circulation, drastically reducing the cost of equipment.

  • Higher Yield Potential: With ample sunlight and space, outdoor plants can grow to be much larger than their indoor counterparts, often resulting in massive yields.

  • Sustainability: This is the most eco-friendly option as it uses no electricity for lights and ventilation.

  • Cons:
    • Lack of Control: You are entirely dependent on the climate. Heavy rain, high winds, or unexpected heat waves can damage or kill your plants.

  • Pest and Disease Risk: Outdoor plants are more susceptible to pests like aphids, spider mites, and caterpillars, as well as diseases like bud rot and powdery mildew. You'll need an integrated pest management (IPM) plan. -- See Out Pest and IPM Page.

  • Security & Legality: Outdoor grows are often less discreet and more vulnerable to theft or unwanted attention. You must also be aware of and comply with all local laws and regulations regarding outdoor cultivation.

A list of the things you will need

Everything you need to create a complete and controlled environment for a successful indoor grow.

Core Equipment

  • Grow Tent: A lightproof and reflective enclosure.
  • Grow Lights: A full-spectrum light source (LED, HPS, or CMH).
  • Ventilation System: Exhaust fan, carbon filter, and ducting for air exchange and odor control.
  • Air Circulation: An oscillating fan to move air within the tent.
  • Environmental Monitoring: A thermometer/hygrometer to track temperature and humidity.

Growing Supplies

  • Growing Medium: Soil, soilless mix (e.g., coco coir), or a hydroponic system.
  • Nutrient Line: A nutrient solution formulated for your chosen medium.
  • Containers: Fabric pots or a hydroponic system reservoir.

Essential Tools

  • Watering: pH meter/pen.
  • Plant Care: Trimming scissors and plant training ties/stakes.

Backyard Cultivation Checklist

The essential items to support your plants outdoors, leveraging natural resources like sun and rain.

Location & Medium

  • Growing Space: A garden plot or large containers.
  • Soil: Amended, nutrient-rich soil.
  • Sunlight: A location with 6-8+ hours of direct sun.

Protection & Maintenance

  • Water Source: A reliable hose or sprinkler system.
  • Pest Control: Organic sprays (neem oil) or protective netting.
  • Structural Support: Trellis, stakes, or cages to support plants.
  • Security: Fencing or other protection from animals and theft.

Essential Tools

  • Gardening Basics: Shovel, watering can, and gloves.
